Keratin for Hair and Skin, Explained

Hair is already dead when you see it, so nothing feeds it keratin. What hydrolysed protein really does, why bond builders differ, and when protein backfires.

Keratin is a structural protein, and structural is the operative word. It isn’t a nutrient your hair absorbs or a treatment that soaks in. It’s the material your hair and nails are built out of, laid down inside the follicle by cells that then die and compact into a fibre. By the time a strand emerges from your scalp, it’s already finished — dead, inert, and incapable of being fed anything.

Which makes “keratin” on a bottle a claim worth reading carefully.

What it’s doing in your hair

A hair shaft is roughly ninety percent keratin, arranged in a way that explains most of hair’s behaviour.

The proteins coil into helices, the helices twist into bundles, and the bundles are held together by disulfide bonds — sulfur-to-sulfur links between cysteine amino acids. Those bonds are unusually strong, which is why hair can be stretched and bent and return to shape, and why hair is so resistant to decay that it survives in archaeological sites for thousands of years.

Those bonds are also exactly what bleach, relaxers, perms and repeated heat break. Chemical services work by deliberately breaking disulfide bonds and reforming them in a new configuration. Damage isn’t a side effect of the process; it is the process, performed carefully.

The same protein, doing a different job in skin

Skin’s outermost layer is built from keratinocytes — cells that manufacture keratin, migrate upward, flatten, die, and form the barrier that keeps water in and everything else out. Somewhere between two and four weeks from birth to shed, depending on your age.

Nails are the same protein packed more densely still.

So when a serum promises to “restore keratin” to your skin, the honest translation is that it’s supporting the cells that make it, or reducing what damages them. Nothing applied topically becomes structural keratin, because keratin is made inside living cells and assembled there.

Can you put protein back into a hair strand?

Partly, and the nuance matters more than either the marketing or the backlash suggests.

Hydrolysed proteins — keratin, wheat, rice, silk, broken into fragments small enough to penetrate the cuticle — do migrate into damaged areas of the shaft and temporarily fill the gaps. Damaged hair is porous, so it takes them up readily. The strand genuinely feels stronger and looks smoother.

What it isn’t is permanent. Those fragments aren’t bonded into the original structure; they’re occupying space in it. They wash out over several shampoos and the deficit returns.

Bond builders are the different thing. Rather than filling gaps, they target the broken disulfide bonds themselves and reform links across the break. That’s a repair rather than a filler, and it’s why bond treatments and protein treatments aren’t interchangeable even though both get called “repair”.

Protein overload is real, and it’s over-diagnosed

Hair needs a working balance of protein and moisture. Too much protein and not enough moisture leaves the shaft stiff, brittle, straw-like, and prone to snapping — which is precisely what the person doing weekly protein masks was trying to avoid.

The confusing part: protein overload and protein deficiency feel similar in the hand. Both give you brittle, breaking hair. So people diagnose deficiency, do more protein treatments, and make it worse.

The distinction is elasticity. Take a wet strand and pull gently. Hair that stretches a long way and doesn’t spring back needs protein. Hair that snaps almost immediately with no stretch has too much of it and needs moisture.

Fine hair, low-porosity hair and hair that hasn’t been chemically processed generally needs far less protein than the aisle implies.

Does eating protein help?

Only if you’re not getting enough, and then substantially.

Keratin is built from amino acids that come from dietary protein, and the body triages during shortage — hair and nails are not vital organs. Genuine protein deficiency shows up as hair loss and brittle nails, and correcting it fixes both.

If you already eat adequate protein, more doesn’t build better hair. The follicle isn’t waiting on raw material; it’s limited by its own programming. Same for keratin supplements, which are digested into constituent amino acids like any other protein — the body doesn’t route them preferentially to your hair because of what they were before you swallowed them.

Where deficiency is common enough to be worth checking: iron, vitamin D, and B12, particularly for anyone menstruating or eating a restricted diet. Worth a blood test and a conversation with your doctor rather than a supplement bought on spec.

Reading a label that says “keratin”

The word appears on products doing four different things, and the ingredient list tells you which.

Hydrolysed keratin is the fragment small enough to enter the shaft. It’s the version that does the temporary filling job described above, and it’s the only form with a plausible mechanism inside hair.

Keratin amino acids are broken down further still — small, hydrating, and not doing structural work.

Whole keratin protein sits on the outside of the cuticle. It smooths and adds slip and doesn’t penetrate anything.

And “keratin complex” or “keratin technology” as a marketing phrase, with no keratin ingredient in the list at all, which happens more than you’d like.

Position matters as well as presence. An ingredient listed after fragrance is present in a fraction of a percent, and a fraction of a percent of hydrolysed protein is doing nothing measurable.

The salon smoothing treatment, honestly

Salon “keratin treatments” are worth separating from everything above, because they’re a styling service rather than a repair.

The process coats the shaft in a formulation and uses a flat iron at high heat to seal it, which relaxes the hair’s natural pattern and produces months of smoothness. That result is real. It isn’t rebuilding anything — it’s a coating held on by heat, and it wears off as the coating does.

The safety question is worth asking directly. Traditional formulas relied on formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents, which are released as gas when the iron hits them. Formaldehyde-free versions exist and generally produce a subtler result. Either way, ventilation is a fair thing to ask about before booking, and stylists performing these all day carry more exposure than any client does.

What it costs your hair: high heat over the full length, repeated every few months. On hair that’s already fine or previously bleached, that’s a meaningful load.

Building the routine around the balance

Do the elasticity test before you buy anything — a wet strand, pulled gently. Stretchy and slow to recover means protein. Snapping with no stretch means moisture.

From there: a bond builder monthly if your hair has been chemically processed, a protein treatment once or twice a month if the test points that way, and a moisturizing mask on the alternating weeks. Heat protectant every single time heat touches your hair, without exceptions, because prevention costs less than repair in every sense.

Retest every couple of months. The balance shifts with the season, with how much you’re colouring, and with how much sun and chlorine the hair has taken.

Questions we get

Is a salon keratin treatment the same thing? No. Those are smoothing services that use heat to seal a formulation onto the shaft, and the traditional versions relied on formaldehyde-releasing agents. The result is real and temporary, and it’s a styling change rather than a repair. Ventilation matters — ask what’s in it.

How often should I use a protein treatment? Once or twice a month for chemically processed hair, less for virgin hair, and only when the elasticity test points that way. Weekly is where most protein overload comes from.

Do keratin supplements do anything? Not specifically. They’re protein, digested like any protein. If you’re deficient, correcting that helps; if you aren’t, extra doesn’t get routed to your follicles. Talk to your doctor before adding supplements, especially alongside others.

Why do my nails split when my hair is fine? Nails take longer to show a problem and are far more affected by water and detergent exposure. Frequent hand-washing softens the nail plate and repeated swelling and drying separates its layers — often a mechanical problem rather than a nutritional one.
