Red light therapy has quietly become the most expensive thing in a lot of people’s bathrooms. A face mask is one thing — strap it on, ten minutes, done. But once you start looking at wands, half-body panels, and six-foot units that cost four figures, the category gets murky fast. The spec sheets are full of numbers that sound authoritative and mean almost nothing.

So let’s sort out what the light does, which numbers matter, and whether a panel is worth the money. Short version: the mechanism is real, the effect sizes are modest, and about half the marketing you’ll read is arithmetic with its thumb on the scale.

What the wavelengths are actually for

Red light therapy — the clinical term is photobiomodulation — uses specific wavelengths of light that your cells absorb. The leading explanation involves cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in your mitochondria, absorbing that light and nudging cellular energy production. Research suggests this is what’s behind the downstream effects people chase. It’s a plausible mechanism with a lot of lab work behind it, and it’s still being argued over.

Two bands matter:

Red, roughly 630 to 660 nanometers. This is the shallow one. It’s absorbed mostly in the epidermis and upper dermis, which is why it’s the wavelength studied for skin outcomes — collagen density, fine lines, redness, wound healing. If your goal is your face, this is the band doing the work.

Near-infrared, roughly 810 to 850 nanometers. Invisible, penetrates deeper, and it’s the band studied for muscle soreness, joint discomfort, and post-exercise recovery. Most of the athletic-recovery research uses near-infrared or a red/NIR combination. This is why full-body panels almost always run both — the skin claims and the recovery claims live at different depths.

A device that only emits 660nm isn’t going to do much for your quads. A device that’s mostly 850nm isn’t optimized for your face. Panels marketed as dual-wavelength genuinely are more versatile, which is the one place the marketing and the science mostly agree.

Irradiance is the number that matters — and it’s the one that gets fudged

Forget LED count. “360 LEDs!” tells you nothing, the same way “eight speakers” tells you nothing about a stereo. Three hundred weak diodes can deliver less usable light than a hundred strong ones.

The number that matters is irradiance: how much light energy lands on a square centimeter of you, measured in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). Combine irradiance with time and you get dose, expressed in joules per square centimeter. Dose is what the studies are actually testing.

Here’s where it goes sideways. Irradiance is meaningless without a stated distance, because light falls off hard as you back away. A panel that reads 100 mW/cm² at the surface might read 30 at six inches and under 20 at a foot. Brands love to publish the number measured at zero distance — pressed right against the diodes, a position nobody uses — and then recommend you stand 12 inches back. Both statements are technically true. Together they’re a bait and switch.

The second trick involves the meter. Cheap solar-power meters read everything hitting the sensor, including wavelengths outside the therapeutic bands and ambient room light. A brand that measures with one of those, at zero distance, in a bright room, gets a genuinely enormous number it can print in bold. Reputable manufacturers publish irradiance at a specified distance, usually six inches, and say what instrument they used. That transparency is a better buying signal than any single number on the box.

A third trick is subtler: some brands quote peak irradiance at the exact center of the panel, where output is highest. The edges can be dramatically weaker, and if you’re standing in front of one, half of you is in that edge zone.

Does distance really change that much?

Yes, and it’s the most common way people accidentally waste their sessions. Light intensity drops steeply with distance — not quite the textbook inverse-square curve, since a panel is an array rather than a single point, but steep enough that doubling your distance can cut your effective dose by more than half.

This cuts both ways, though — closer isn’t automatically better. Photobiomodulation appears to follow a biphasic dose response, meaning there’s a window: too little does nothing, and past a certain point the benefit plateaus or reverses. Standing four inches from a high-output panel for thirty minutes won’t speed anything up. Follow the manufacturer’s distance and time, and resist the urge to freelance.

Practically: for skin, most protocols land around six to twelve inches for ten to fifteen minutes. For deeper recovery use, closer and slightly longer. Consistency beats intensity here.

Wand, panel, or full-body?

The form factor question comes down to what you’re treating and how much patience you have.

Wands are handhelds you glide over your face and neck, usually stacking red light with microcurrent or gentle warmth. Small treatment area, low output, and you have to hold them there — which means realistically you’ll do a few minutes, not fifteen. They’re the cheapest way in and the least likely to produce a visible change. Fine as a habit-builder. Not a serious light dose.

Half-body and desktop panels are the sweet spot for most people. Enough surface area to treat your face, chest, and shoulders at once, or your back, or a knee. You set it on a table or hang it on a door, and you stand or sit there. This is where the money starts being defensible, roughly the $200 to $700 range.

Full-body panels and towers run $1,000 to $3,000 and up. They cover you head to toe in one session, which is genuinely nicer and genuinely faster. They are not several times more effective than a good half-body panel — you’re buying convenience and coverage, not a different biological result. If someone tells you otherwise, they’re selling.

The evidence, honestly

Here’s the part most roundups skip. Photobiomodulation has a real research base, particularly for wound healing and some musculoskeletal applications, and there are peer-reviewed trials showing measurable changes in skin parameters like collagen density and wrinkle depth. That’s genuine.

The caveats are substantial. Most consumer-device studies are small — often a few dozen participants — and a meaningful share are funded or run by the companies selling the devices, which doesn’t make them worthless but does mean you should weight them accordingly. Protocols vary wildly between studies. And “statistically significant improvement” in a trial can still mean a change you’d struggle to notice in your own mirror.

Realistic expectation: with consistent use — three to five sessions a week for eight to twelve weeks — some people see softer fine lines, calmer redness, and better skin texture. Some people see nothing. Nobody sees a transformation. If you want dramatic, that’s in-office lasers and prescription retinoids, and it costs accordingly. Talk to a dermatologist about what’s realistic for your skin before you spend panel money.

Who should skip this

A few real cautions, and they’re not boilerplate.

Eyes. Don’t stare into the diodes. Near-infrared is invisible, so your blink reflex doesn’t protect you from it — the light is there whether you perceive it or not. Use the goggles that come with the panel, or close your eyes and turn your head.

Photosensitizing medications. Certain antibiotics, isotretinoin, some diuretics, St. John’s wort, and other drugs increase light sensitivity. Check with your prescriber before starting. This one genuinely matters.

Melasma. Melasma can be aggravated by heat as well as light, and panels do produce warmth at close range. If you have active melasma, get a dermatologist’s read before you start rather than after.

Pregnancy, active skin cancers, lupus, or any photosensitive condition. Ask your doctor. Not a hedge — an actual gap in the evidence.

So is a panel worth it?

For most people, no. Not as a first purchase, anyway.

If your budget for skincare devices is a few hundred dollars total, a well-formulated retinoid and daily sunscreen will outperform any red light device on wrinkles, and it isn’t close. Where panels earn their keep: you’ve already got the basics handled, you want the recovery benefits alongside the skin benefits, and you’re realistic that this is a slow, cumulative, three-months-before-you-notice-anything kind of thing. Under those conditions, a mid-range half-body panel from a brand that publishes honest irradiance figures is a defensible purchase. Under any other conditions, it’s a beautiful object that ends up leaning against a wall.
