Flip over almost any nail polish bottle right now and there’s a number on it. 5-free. 10-free. 16-free. One brand advertises 21-free, which raises an obvious question: free of what, exactly? And if 21 ingredients are bad enough to brag about excluding, what was in the bottle you bought three years ago?

Short version: the story is more marketing than menace, but it’s not nothing. The first few exclusions were genuinely meaningful. The last dozen are mostly a numbers arms race. Here’s how to read the label without panicking or overpaying.

Where the counting started

The original number was three. Back in the mid-2000s, mainstream polish brands started reformulating to remove what the industry nicknamed the “toxic trio”: formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Those three earned the attention. Formaldehyde is a known irritant and sensitizer that regulators classify as a carcinogen at certain exposure levels. Toluene is a solvent with well-documented concerns around inhalation exposure. DBP, a plasticizer, has been flagged in research as a possible endocrine disruptor, and the EU restricted it in cosmetics years ago.

Worth saying clearly: most of that research concerns high or repeated occupational exposure — think salon workers breathing polish fumes forty hours a week, not someone painting their nails on a Sunday night. But “3-free” was a reasonable response to reasonable evidence, and today the trio is largely gone from major brands anyway. OPI, Essie, Sally Hansen — the drugstore staples dropped these ingredients over a decade ago without putting a number on the bottle.

Then the numbers started climbing

5-free added formaldehyde resin (a formaldehyde derivative that can trigger contact allergies in sensitized people) and camphor (which can cause headaches and irritation in high concentrations, though it’s also in vapor rubs you put directly on your chest). Both are defensible additions. A person with a formaldehyde allergy benefits from knowing the resin is out.

After that, things get looser. 7-free typically drops ethyl tosylamide and xylene. 10-free versions add things like parabens, animal-derived ingredients, and fragrance. By the time you reach 16-free and 21-free, brands are excluding ingredients like gluten and bisphenol A — and here’s the part the marketing skips: several of the ingredients on these longer lists were never common in nail polish to begin with. Excluding an ingredient your competitors also don’t use isn’t a safety improvement. It’s a bigger number on the label.

There’s no regulatory body auditing these claims either. No agency defines what “10-free” must mean, so two brands can count to ten differently. One brand’s list includes triphenyl phosphate (TPHP); another’s counts “gluten” as a slot. The number tells you a brand did some exclusions and hired a copywriter. It doesn’t tell you which exclusions matter.

“Non-toxic” isn’t a regulated term. Neither is “clean.”

This trips people up constantly, and not just with polish. In the US, “non-toxic,” “clean,” and “natural” have no legal definition in cosmetics. A brand can print any of them on a bottle without proving anything to anyone. That doesn’t mean the brands using these words are lying — many are careful, transparent companies — but the word itself is doing zero verification work.

It’s also worth keeping the dose-and-route point in view. Nail plates are keratin, not skin — they’re a fairly good barrier. The exposure researchers actually study tends to be inhalation (fumes during application) and skin contact around the nail. One small study did find a TPHP metabolite in participants’ urine after polishing, which suggests some absorption happens — but detecting a metabolite is not the same as demonstrating harm, and researchers themselves frame it as a reason for more study, not alarm. That’s the honest state of the evidence: some signals worth watching, nothing that justifies fear-mongering about an occasional manicure.

What’s actually worth caring about

If you want to cut through the number wars, here’s a sane hierarchy.

The original trio — formaldehyde, toluene, DBP — is worth avoiding, and the good news is you’d have to try fairly hard to find them in a mainstream polish today. Formaldehyde resin and camphor matter if you have sensitive skin or a known formaldehyde allergy. TPHP is the one newer ingredient with genuine open research questions; some people reasonably choose to skip it while the science settles. Talk to your doctor if you’re pregnant and polish frequently — not because there’s proof of harm, but because “minimize unnecessary chemical exposure during pregnancy” is standard, boring, sensible advice.

Everything past that on a 21-free list — gluten, parabens at cosmetic concentrations, ingredients that were never in polish anyway — is preference, not protection. Buy it if you like the brand. Just don’t pay extra believing the number is a safety score.

The water-based trade-off nobody puts on the front label

There’s a whole category beyond “free-of” solvent polishes: water-based formulas, where water replaces most of the chemical solvents. They’re the lowest-fume option and a good pick for kids, and some people just prefer how they smell (barely at all).

The trade-off is wear time, and it’s real. Solvents are what make traditional polish level out glassy and bond hard to the nail. Water-based polish typically chips faster — sometimes within a day or two — and can peel off in sheets, which some users like (no remover needed) and others find maddening. The free-of brands worth recommending mostly stayed solvent-based for exactly this reason: they removed the controversial ingredients but kept the chemistry that makes polish last a week. If someone hands you a polish that’s both “completely natural” and “lasts two weeks,” be skeptical of at least one of those claims.

We skipped anything that treats “non-toxic” as the entire personality of the brand while chipping by Tuesday, and we skipped dip and gel systems entirely since they’re a different conversation.

So what should you actually do?

If you paint your nails a few times a month, any major brand is fine. The scary ingredients that started this whole movement are already out of mainstream formulas, your nail plate is a decent barrier, and occasional exposure to polish fumes in a ventilated room is not a meaningful health event based on anything currently published.

If you polish weekly, work in or near a salon, or you’re pregnant, swapping to a free-of formula is a reasonable, low-cost hedge — emphasis on hedge. You’re not correcting a proven danger; you’re trimming an exposure that research is still characterizing, which is a perfectly good reason to switch when the alternatives perform this well. And whichever bottle you use, ventilation while painting does more for you than any number on the label.

One more thing that matters more than ingredient lists: how you treat the nail itself. Constant back-to-back manicures cause more visible nail problems (dehydration, peeling, white patches) than any individual polish ingredient. FAQ

Is regular nail polish dangerous? For occasional at-home use, current evidence doesn’t support calling it dangerous. The stronger concerns in the research involve occupational exposure — nail techs working with these products all day, every day, often with poor ventilation.

Does a higher “free” number mean a safer polish? Not reliably. The jump from 0 to 5 removed questioned ingredients. Past that, brands are often excluding things polish rarely contained anyway. Read the actual exclusion list, not the number.

Should I switch polishes while pregnant? Research suggests some polish ingredients like TPHP can be absorbed in small amounts, though harm from normal use hasn’t been demonstrated. A free-of formula is a low-cost precaution many people choose — but this is squarely a talk-to-your-doctor question, not a blog-post question.

Do water-based polishes last as long? No, and any honest brand will admit it. Expect noticeably shorter wear — often one to three days versus five to seven for a good solvent-based polish. They’re the right call for kids or for anyone prioritizing minimal fumes over longevity.

Is “non-toxic” on the label verified by anyone? No. It’s an unregulated marketing term in the US, with no agency checking the claim. Brand transparency — a published, specific exclusion list — is a far better signal than the word itself.

The polish aisle rewards people who read past the front label. The numbers were a useful correction that curdled into a bragging contest — so take the three or four exclusions that matter, ignore the rest, and spend your attention on nail care basics instead. A well-hydrated nail in a 5-free polish will always beat a neglected one in a 21-free.
