A fingernail takes about six months to grow from the matrix to the free edge. Toenails take a year or more. So the ridge you noticed this morning, the one running from cuticle to tip like a groove in a record, wasn’t made this morning. It was made in the autumn, by cells you can’t see, under skin you’re told not to push back.

That lag is the single most useful thing to understand about nails, and it’s the reason almost everything you read about them is unfalsifiable. You start a supplement, and eight weeks later your nails look better, and you credit the supplement. Eight weeks is not long enough for a nail to have grown out. Something else changed, or nothing did and you’re looking harder.

Where the nail is actually made

The visible nail is dead. It’s a compressed plate of keratin with no blood supply and no capacity to repair itself, which is why a split never heals and simply has to grow out. The living part is the matrix, tucked under the fold of skin at the base, and about a quarter of it sits far enough forward to show through as the pale half-moon.

Everything that happens to a nail happens there, months before you see it. A fever, a crash diet, a course of chemotherapy, a hard week of stress: the matrix falters, lays down a thinner or less orderly band of keratin, and that band travels up the finger on a slow conveyor belt until it clears the tip. Nails are a fairly honest record of the last half year of your health. They’re just a delayed one.

The plate also holds water, roughly a fifth of its weight, and that water is most of what makes a nail flexible rather than glassy. Nails don’t break because they’re soft. They break because they’ve dried out and lost the give.

What changes in your forties, and what it’s fair to blame

Three things drift at once, and they’re easy to conflate.

Growth slows. Nail growth rate declines gradually with age, so the same amount of daily wear now falls on a plate that’s replacing itself more slowly. Damage accumulates instead of clearing.

The matrix gets less uniform. Longitudinal ridging, those fine vertical lines running the length of the nail, is one of the most common age-related nail changes there is. It reflects slightly uneven keratin production rather than disease, and it’s the change women most often bring to a dermatologist convinced something is wrong. In isolation, it isn’t. And the water leaves. This is where hormones come in, and it deserves an honest caveat: the research on estrogen and skin is substantial, the research on estrogen and nails is much thinner. What’s reasonable to say is that falling estrogen is associated with reduced skin hydration and lipid content across the board, and nails sit in that same envelope of tissue. Women commonly report brittleness arriving alongside the other changes of the transition. That’s an association worth taking seriously and not the same thing as a proven mechanism, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Brittle, or splitting? They’re different problems

Lumping these together is why so many women buy the wrong product.

Brittleness, in the strict sense, is a nail that snaps across or crumbles at the edge. It’s a dehydration and flexibility problem, and it responds to sealing water in.

Splitting in horizontal layers, where the tip peels back like a sheet of mica, is a different animal. It comes overwhelmingly from wet-dry cycling. Every time a nail soaks and then dries, the plate swells and contracts, and the bonds between its layers loosen a little more. Dishes, hand sanitizer, swimming, washing your hair, twenty hand-washes a day. The nail delaminates from the outside in. Our guide to weak, peeling nails goes deeper on the repair side.

You can have both. But a hardening treatment aimed at a peeling nail usually makes it worse, because you’ve made a dry, delaminating plate stiffer and given it less room to bend before it fails.

The deficiency question, answered carefully

Nail changes do sometimes flag something systemic, and midlife is exactly when a few of those become more likely in women. That’s an argument for testing, not for guessing.

Thyroid disease is the one to have on your radar. Hypothyroidism rises with age in women and can show up as slow-growing, brittle, ridged nails alongside dry skin and hair shedding. If your nails changed and so did your energy, your temperature tolerance or your hair, that’s a bloodwork conversation.

Iron deficiency is the other common one, and it’s easy to acquire during a stretch of heavy or erratic periods. In its more advanced form it can flatten or spoon the nail, but long before that it simply makes nails soft and slow. Ask for ferritin specifically, not just a hemoglobin count, because you can be iron-depleted with normal hemoglobin.

Now the part almost nobody mentions. High-dose biotin, the supplement most often sold for nails, interferes with a wide range of laboratory immunoassays, including thyroid panels and the troponin test used to assess chest pain. It doesn’t change your thyroid. It changes the number the lab reports. Stop biotin several days before any bloodwork and tell whoever draws it that you take it. If you want one thing from this post, make it that.

As for whether biotin does anything for nails: in genuine deficiency, yes. In women who eat normally and aren’t deficient, the evidence is weak and the trials are small and old. It isn’t dangerous. It’s mostly just not the answer, and it complicates your labs while you wait to find out.

What we’d change first

The interventions that work here are unglamorous, and they’re aimed at water rather than protein.

Wear gloves for anything wet. Cotton-lined, not bare rubber, and for dishes, cleaning and gardening both. This is the highest-return change available and the one people skip because it feels excessive. It isn’t; it’s the whole ballgame for a peeling nail.

Oil the nails, not just the cuticles, and do it at night. Jojoba is the useful one here because its molecular size lets it penetrate the plate rather than sit on it. Massage it into the nail, the fold and the underside of the free edge. Twice a day if you can manage it, and once is still better than none.

Keep them short while you’re rebuilding. Length is leverage, and leverage is how a weakened nail catches and tears. A rounded, short shape survives a bad month; a long square one doesn’t.

File in one direction with a fine glass file. Sawing back and forth with a coarse emery board frays the layers you’re trying to keep bonded together.

Rethink acetone and the salon calendar. Acetone strips lipids and dries the plate, and back-to-back gel manicures give the nail no window to rehydrate. The damage attributed to gel is usually the removal, not the gel. If you love them, take a few weeks off between sets rather than quitting outright.

And treat hand cream as a nail product. Most women apply it to the backs of their hands and never reach the nail fold, which is the one bit of skin the matrix sits under.

What we’d put in the cart

Nothing here is exciting, and that’s the point. This is a moisture-and-friction problem, and the fixes are cheap.

Jojoba nail and cuticle oil

The one thing on this list we’d insist on. Small enough molecules to get into the plate instead of sitting on top of it. Keep it wherever you sit in the evening, or it won’t get used.

Cotton-lined cleaning gloves

Unsexy and more effective than any strengthener. Stops the swell-and-shrink cycle that peels nails apart in layers.

Crystal glass nail file

Seals the edge as it shapes rather than shredding it. One file lasts years, and it’s washable.

Urea hand cream

Urea holds water and softens thickened skin, so it works on the nail fold and the cracked fingertips that arrive with it. Park one at the kitchen sink.

Acetone-free polish remover

Slower, and worth it. Acetone pulls lipids out of a plate that’s already short on them.

Overnight cotton gloves

Oil, cream, gloves, eight hours. Ridiculous-looking, and the fastest visible improvement you’ll get in two weeks.

How we picked

Everything above targets water content or mechanical stress, because those are the two levers a nail plate responds to once it has left the matrix. We deliberately left out hardeners and strengtheners that work by cross-linking the surface, including the formaldehyde-based ones. They do make a nail measurably harder, and a harder nail with no flexibility shatters rather than bends. We also left out supplements, which belong in a conversation with a doctor and a blood test rather than a shopping cart.

When it isn’t cosmetic

A few nail findings are worth an appointment rather than an oil.

A single dark stripe running the length of one nail, particularly if it widens, changes color, or bleeds pigment into the surrounding skin, needs to be looked at. Melanoma can present that way, and it’s frequently mistaken for a bruise.

So does a nail lifting from its bed, thick yellow crumbling nails, sudden pitting or dimpling across several nails, spooned nails that curve upward, or nails that changed shape at the fingertip. Add to that any nail change arriving with fatigue, hair loss, temperature intolerance or weight change, which points at thyroid or iron rather than at the nail itself.

None of this is common. It’s just the short list where waiting six months to see whether it grows out is the wrong call.

Questions we get

Will my nails go back to how they were? Partly. The dehydration side responds well, and most women see a real difference in flexibility and splitting within two to three months of gloves plus nightly oil. Age-related ridging is largely permanent, though it looks far less obvious on a well-moisturized nail. Anything driven by a thyroid or iron problem improves when that problem is treated, on the nail’s own slow schedule.

Is it worth buffing the ridges flat? Lightly, occasionally, with a fine buffer. The plate is only so thick, and repeated buffing thins it until you’ve traded a ridged nail for a bendy one. A ridge-filling base coat achieves the same look without removing anything.

Do gel manicures cause this? Not the ridging. Gel contributes to thinning and peeling mainly through removal — the soaking, scraping and filing — rather than through the product itself. Spacing sets further apart does more good than switching brands.

My nails changed but nothing else did. Do I still need bloodwork? If it’s mild brittleness in your forties with no other symptoms, try three months of the boring routine first. If they’re also growing slowly, or you’ve had heavy periods, or anything else on the red-flag list applies, get tested rather than waiting it out.

Does hormone therapy help nails? There’s no good evidence it’s worth taking for that reason, and nails are not a sensible thing to base that decision on. Some women notice an improvement alongside the skin changes. Discuss it with your clinician on the merits that matter.

The short version

Nails in perimenopause are a water problem wearing the costume of a protein problem, and the entire industry is built around selling you the protein. Gloves, oil, short nails and a glass file will outperform every strengthener on the shelf, and they’ll do it for the price of one.
